Boxing
No longer reserved for actual combat, boxing is an increasingly popular method of exercise. With boxing, you not only get a comprehensive full body workout but a great way to blow off steam. For men, women, kids, and people of all abilities – boxing is an awesome and effective way to stay in shape. It can burn up to 400 calories if you really push yourself, and helps to build muscle tone, agility, speed, and hand-eye coordination. Though it wouldn’t seem like it, boxing is an intense core workout. In your boxing session at Spinoxhiit, you will use only the best quality equipment including jump ropes, gloves, and punching bags.
Benefits of Boxing
-Better cardiovascular health: As an intense cardio exercise, boxing can help to keep your heart healthy and strong.
-Increased strength: Boxing is an extremely muscular activity and builds total body strength.
-Improved hand-eye coordination: Because boxing is so precise, it strengthens your hand-eye coordination and is great for people looking to be more deliberate in their movements.
-Stress relief: Nothing relieves stress like taking your problems out on a punching bag.
-Better body composition: Being a high-intensity interval exercise, boxing builds muscle and reduces fat.
-Works your total body: Boxing works all your muscles, similar to running.
-Works your mind: Since it requires great calculation and focus, boxing can drastically improve mental ability.
-Improves focus: Boxing is a great way to train your brain to focus.
-Boosts confidence: Nothing boosts confidence like knowing you’re improving your health (and could probably beat up anyone in the room).
Boxing Tips for Beginners
- Relax – Those taking a boxing class for the first time might exhibit tensed muscles and, as a result, throw rigid punches. Believe it or not, the key to boxing is relaxation. So loosen up your shoulders a bit and relax your hands as opposed to clenching them tightly. We often hear people say they wanted to try boxing as a stress-relieving workout. But just because boxing is an intense activity doesn’t mean you need to be tense.
- Breathe – We’re willing to bet you won’t enjoy boxing if you can’t control your breathing. What do we mean by this exactly? Well, start by taking a breath before every combination. Then breathe out as you throw a punch. It’s important to know that your punching power and breathing go hand in hand. Don’t hesitate to ask your instructor for assistance with proper breathing techniques during a boxing class.
- Be mindful of your footwork – Good footwork is often overlooked by those just starting to box. Our first piece of advice is to stay light on your feet. If you put too much weight on your front foot, you probably aren’t going to be as nimble as you could be. Remember that boxing is a full-body workout. Should you choose to throw proper footwork out the window, you’re putting additional stress on your upper body.
- Have fun – More than anything else, boxing classes should be fun. At Spinoxhiit in Oak Park, you can count on our instructors to bring an upbeat, inspiring attitude that’s contagious. Rest assured that you probably won’t be the only one trying boxing for the first time. So relax, be open to others’ feedback, and have fun. Again, if you have any questions during your workout, feel free to ask the instructor. We want you to enjoy your session as much as possible.
