For years, friends have tried getting you to join them for a yoga class. You’ve since held firm in that you want to stick to traditional fitness routines that involve running and weight training. But recently, the desire just hasn’t been there to workout. So you tell your friends it’s finally time. In just a few days, you will be attending that first yoga class. Many beginning yoga students deal with a few obstacles as they get going. From struggling with the vocabulary to being skeptical over certain poses, you may even go so far as to second-guess the decision to try yoga. Keep reading for some suggestions for beginners that will hopefully nourish the joys of yoga for a lifetime.

  1. Keep a practice journal – Yoga has the power to change the way we see ourselves. That said, it’s a good idea to jot down thoughts about your practice, even during the times in which you’re confused or discouraged. Feel free to list the postures you know and the ones you continue to learn. Write down new terms that you are curious about. Don’t hesitate to put any questions you may have about meditation on paper.
  2. Make space in your home – Yoga shouldn’t just be something you do with others in a group setting. Do what you can to create a space in your home that includes a mat and maybe even an inspiring image nearby. This can put you in the right frame of mind to practice in the same place.
  3. Define your practice – Figure out how much time you have available for practice, the technique you will focus on, as well as the balance among meditation, breathing, and asana. Be sure to ask your teacher for any suggestions they may have.
  4. Purchase a yoga mat – Firm footing is a must for yoga. While you may choose to practice on the carpet at first, make it a point to invest in a sticky mat. Note that some of the spread-legged postures and downward-facing dog poses can become tricky on a surface that’s less than ideal.
  5. Balance the postures with relaxation/meditation – Regular relaxation and meditation will transform you. Remember that in order to achieve enhanced inner strength and equilibrium, a mind-body balance is essential.
  6. Take breathing breaks – As simple as it may be, breathing is the most powerful tool for managing stress. You will find that even a five-minute period of breath awareness will ease the strain of daily thinking and recharge your mental batteries.
  7. Go to bed earlier – After a handful of yoga classes, you may want to establish a routine of your own at home. A long asana and meditation practice won’t happen in the morning, however, if you continue to stay up late. Adjust your schedule accordingly.
